Keys to beating the habit of procrastination

ll of us procrastinate at one time or another. It can, however, develop into a habit that causes us to stagnate and achieve little or nothing in terms of success. The first thing you need to know is why you delay taking on a task that needs to be done.
Hey hey, friend! Welcome back to The Joy-Filled Journey, where coffee meets conviction, and biblical wisdom comes with a side of holy humour.
Now let’s get honest. You ever stare at a task so long it starts staring back at you? Yep, we’re talking about procrastination. That little delay demon that turns “I’ll do it in 5 minutes” into “Why is it Thursday already?”
Listen, we all do it. Whether it’s that closet we won’t clean, that email we won’t write, or that call we keep dodging like it’s a telemarketer. But let’s not beat ourselves up, okay? Procrastination is common, but when it becomes a lifestyle, it turns our purpose into a parking lot.
So today we’re gonna talk about how to break up with procrastination—nicely, firmly, and without texting it back later.
Let’s start with the why. Why do we procrastinate?
Drumroll please… The number one reason is fear. Yep. Good old-fashioned, knee-shaking, what-if-I-fail fear. Sometimes we don’t even realise it. On the surface, it looks like laziness. But underneath, it’s more like “What if I try and I mess up?” or “What if I start and can’t finish?”
So how do we kick fear to the curb and get stuff done? Let’s walk through a few simple, grace-filled, God-honouring strategies.
Number one: Make it simple.
Don’t try to tackle Mount Everest in flip-flops. Break your task down into small chunks. Imagine trying to eat three burgers in thirty minutes. Painful, right? But if you spread that out over a whole day? Suddenly you’re not suffering, you’re snacking. Same with your tasks. Do a little, then do a little more.
Number two: Break up your routine.
If you’ve been staring at a blank screen so long you’ve memorised the pixel pattern, step away. Go outside. Take your laptop to the backyard. Watch what happens when fresh air hits stale thinking. Sometimes the Holy Spirit shows up better under a tree than under fluorescent lights.
Number three: Cut the TV time.
Oof, I know. Don’t throw your remote at me. But do me a favour—check how much time you’ve spent watching TV this week. I guarantee Netflix loves you more than you love yourself. You’d be surprised how much progress you could make on your goals if you swapped one binge for one breakthrough.
Number four: Run from email and social media like Joseph ran from Potiphar’s wife.
I mean it. You start the day scrolling “just for five minutes” and boom, it’s noon, and you’re watching cat videos from 2011. Email and social media are time ninjas. Set boundaries. Check it only after you’ve handled your mission. Get in, get out, and no clicking rabbit holes. You’re not Alice. Stay focused.
Number five: Just. Do. It.
Yes, I stole it from Nike. But seriously, sometimes the only thing between us and progress is the overthinking. You’re not waiting on the perfect mood or the magical time. You’re just delaying. So don’t sit there debating it—just do the thing. Get up. Move forward. Pray if you have to, sing if it helps, bribe yourself with snacks if needed, but do it.
Here’s a little truth bomb for you: Momentum is holy. Once you take that first step, it’s like God meets you there with fresh grace, and before you know it, you’re rolling.
Now let’s bring this all together.
Procrastination doesn’t mean you’re lazy or broken or a failure. It means you’re human. But God didn’t design you to live in a holding pattern. He gave you gifts, dreams, and a calling—and sis, bruh, it’s time to show up for it.
So let’s be people who push past the pause, who pray, plan, and press forward.
Because the Bible says in Ecclesiastes 9:10, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” Not some of your might. Not next week’s might. All of it. Today.
All right, my fellow world-changer, go take that step. Clean the desk. Write the email. Start the thing God put on your heart.
And if you’re still feeling stuck, just rewind this episode, and I’ll pep-talk you all over again.
Until next time, keep your coffee strong, your faith stronger, and remember—God didn’t call you to delay. He called you to do.
Be blessed, and get movin’!
